The
podcast I chose to listen to was "Getting People to Help You" from
HBR Ideacast. In this podcast, they discussed why it is sometimes so hard to
ask people to help you and ways to make it easier to ask for help. The main
reason it is hard to ask for help is for fear of rejection or possibly becoming
less liked. Humans also believe that we are unlikely to get help but in reality,
we are twice as likely to receive help than we believe (Ideacast, 2018). This
podcast talked about how to properly ask for help, how to get over the
uncomfortable feeling while asking for help, and how to comfortably say no to
someone who is asking for your help.
One main concept they focused on in the podcast was how
to properly ask someone for help. Usually, humans have the fear of being
rejected while asking for help. The speakers talked about how first we need to
notice we need help, understand when someone wants to help, and to make them
feel that they are the ones who can help us (Ideacast, 2018). When asking for
help, you do not want to make someone feel controlled or manipulated. Humans
naturally feel good for helping others if they feel like they have the choice.
Therefore, you should explain why their help will be helpful to you and why
their help is the help you need. Another main concept they discuss is how to
say no to someone who is asking for help. If someone asks for your help and you
cannot help them, you should first offer an alternative form of help (like
suggesting someone else who can help them) and then explain why now is not the
best time. This is how you can continue a positive relationship with them.
The topic of asking for help is not necessarily discussed
in the book or in class, but the concept of being a manager/leader is. As a
manager, you have to be able to delegate work among employees. When doing this,
you are essentially asking them to help you complete work because you cannot
complete it all yourself. As a good leader, you should display and offer reciprocity.
When working with employees, you should help them as well so they can see that
you appreciate the help they give to you. You should also go out of your way to
help others so that your employees can see that you are also willing to be a
part of the team. This can lead to a snowball effect within your team so that,
essentially, everyone will become helpful to one another.

In terms
of what I have planned for the remaining individual assignments, for IA02, I
have already spoken will multiple upperclassmen and am deciding which one I
would like to use for IA02. For IA03, I am making an outline for my business
plan and brainstorming with fellow classmates. For IA04, I have put in my
schedule multiple mixers and other events that I can attend to see which one
best fits into my schedule. Finally, for IA05, I have been taking notes for
each guest speaker that we have had and will determine which one I
enjoyed/related to the most to write about.
